chicago luzern exchange has been in existence since 2003. i would argue that this ensemble truly improvises at all times, and at all costs. CLE challenges the question of what improvisation is, and challenges the listener not to prejudge or look for relationship with the past. the past is in there, yes. the lineage of this great art form informs us, certainly. however, the music is about more than tipping the hat to the tradition. CLE is art music; we are pushing ourselves and one another to create something new every time we play.
